Medicare Open Enrollment: What You Need to Know

Medicare Open Enrollment: What You Need to Know

For Medicare enrollees, open enrollment is an opportunity to review and change your coverage options to feel confident it aligns with your evolving healthcare and financial strategies. Understanding the subtleties of Medicare open enrollment is crucial for making informed decisions about your medical care.

This article is to help simplify Medicare open enrollment complexities, and give you a streamlined version of what you need to know. We include information about when open enrollment occurs, what you can do during open enrollment dates, changes to 2025 coverage policies, and how to make informed decisions.

How Does Open Enrollment Work?

First, a simple explanation of how open enrollment works.

For 2024, Medicare open enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7. During this time, you can change your Medicare health plan(s) and prescription drug insurance for the subsequent year.

Keep in mind that open enrollment is not for folks who haven’t signed up for Medicare yet. It’s during the initial enrollment period when you can enroll for the first time.

The open enrollment period impacts Medicare coverage parts differently. These are the changes you can make to each part:

  • You can move to Part C if you’re currently enrolled in Parts A and B coverage.
  • If you already subscribe to Medicare Part C, you can switch back to original Medicare (Parts A and B) or change to a different Medicare Advantage Plan.
  • You can enroll in Part C or Part D for the first time.
  • If you currently have a Medicare Part D subscription, you can change to a different Part D plan or discontinue your prescription drug plan entirely.

If you don’t make any changes at all during open enrollment, your current coverage is carried over to the following year.

2025 Medicare Policy Updates

We’ve highlighted below two of the most significant changes to your Medicare premiums and benefits for 2025. Now is the time to review your coverage and use open enrollment to make any necessary adjustments. Given the upcoming changes, there might be a plan that works better for you.

  1. $2,000 out-of-pocket limit for prescriptions. First, you should be aware that Part D (prescription drug coverage) places an annual $2,000 cap on the amount you can pay out-of-pocket for approved medications. This cap is applicable to both stand-alone Part D insurance and pharmaceutical coverage in Medicare Advantage plans. The $2,000 cap covers coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles for prescription drugs that are approved. This change doesn’t apply to meds that aren’t covered by a plan or premiums.
  2. Program for family caregiver services expanded. The second modification we want to highlight is the introduction of a new program that helps dementia sufferers and their caregivers. A number of resources are now available through a program called the Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE). These resources include 24/7 helpline, a care navigator to connect individuals with medical and community-based support, caregiver education, and up to $2,500 annually for at-home, overnight, or adult day care respite services. To be eligible for this program, participants must not be in a nursing home or hospice, have a diagnosis of dementia, and be enrolled in original Medicare.
